'Jem and the Holograms' trailer is truly outrageous — and not in a good way

2015. május 13. - roflboyy

First off, we've got nothing against reboots. Star Trek's worked pretty skillfully, and Battlestar Galactica's was epic (permit's just not chat roughly the Spider-Man movies).

However, looking at this commercial for the Jem and the Holograms movie, we have to shock why the creators even aggravated. We'll superiority strong judgment until we see the actual film, but it seems beautiful sure the gloss ditches most of the sci-fi and adventure that made the series unique, substituting a vanilla-favored description that we've seen in dozens of tween flicks: Sudden fame can be toxic to friendships.

The new Jem after that misses the most crucial allocation of the original series: Jem's secret identity. Jem isn't supposed to be just shy singer-songwriter Jerrica Benton in makeup  the improvement is that Jerrica becomes and enormously swap person gone she's Jem. She doesn't isolated court prosecution differently, but everyone else treats her differently.

That dual identity (known without help to her sister and closest partners) is what led to for that gloss many of the tempting situations in the Jem TV series as yet to be ease as the ongoing  and still unresolved, as far and wide-off as we know  idolize triangle in the midst of Jem/Jerrica and her (their?) on-anew/off-subsequent to again boyfriend Rio.

And, seriously, no holograms? There's an sloping hint to Synergy, the compound holographic system that transforms Jerrica into Jem (and empowers the organization's unexpected-track to fame), but it sounds more taking into account a winking mention than a determination device.

In today's world holograms aren't just near to reality  they are realism, and they'almost already appearing, if not headlining, genuine concerts. Why drop such a fundamental element of the original premise?

I'm speculating here, but if the creators opted to ditch the more sci-fi aspects of the Jem storyline therefore as to not intimidate their approach demographic (i.e., young girls), that strikes me as a misguided option in an period where the most popular movie in the world is roughly a superhero team stroke a homicidal robot.

I hope there's more to Jem and the Holograms — which is supposed to hit theaters in December — than what's on display in this trailer. But if it's not, I would strongly encourage Hasbro to hit the reboot button again on the franchise, preferably with series creator Christy Marx at the helm.
